Welcome!  Today you had a wonderful opportunity to work with an amazing little kindergarten student and share some knowledge on Microsoft Word.  As a freshman student you were asked to create a lesson plan for a student, here at your own school, who is just beginning school and therefore, most likely, just beginning to be exposed to technology.

Please post a reflection (in paragraph form--7-10 sentences), that expresses your thoughts, feelings, reactions, realizations about this experience!  You may answer one, two, three or all of the questions below (15 classwork points):

1) What preconceptions (before thoughts) did you have about this experience?  Were those preconceptions right, or was your experience different than you had imagined?
2) What was the greatest challenge when planning for your lesson? What was the greatest challenge when implementing it with your student, today?
3) What was one thing about your lesson plan today that you wish you would have planned differently?
4) How did this experience differ from other experiences that you have had as a digital literacy student?
5) If there was one thing you could change about today's time with your student, what would it be?
6) What did you enjoy most about working with your student today?  What did you least enjoy?

  1. Before going with my kindergarten student my preconceptions were that i was going to hate trying to teach a little kid how to use technology. But by the end of the day I realized that it wasn't really that hard it just took a little bit of effort to guide them through it, overall my experience was not as I had imagined it. If there was anything i could have changed about my time with the student would have been having more time to really explain it in more precise detail to them so they become more familiar with it. The part I enjoyed the most would probably be teaching them because it showed me that I do have the potential to teach someone who knows NOTHING! about technology. My least favorite part was saying goodbye to my student because I wish I could have had more time to teach him.

  2. What I enjoyed the most was working with my kinder-gardener David. I enjoyed working with him because I love little kids. Besides that he understood everything me and my Steffany would tell him to do. Also, because he seemed very happy learning how to use Microsoft Word and I felt proud of myself because I taught well, so he can understand since he is a kinder-gardener. I least enjoyed being in the class because it was really hot and I felt it difficult to work in their because it was very crowded. I thought this experience was going to be difficult because kinder-gardeners are just kids barely learning how to speak. I thought it was going to be very difficult for them to type and use the mouse. I was actually wrong. My son David was very smart and he typed all by himself looking for the letters. Also, he knew how to use the mouse and click the objects he had to. It was a great experience and I wish I can do it again.

    4. I agree with Xina's point of view, it was excited to learn something new. I also wouldn't mind working with these student again. It was something new that helped the students understand micro soft word.

  3. Question 1 > This experience with kinder-gardeners was not what I expected. I believed we would have had more time to show them some steps. I also did not think this project would be less than one day. I imagined it to at least be three days in a row. The greatest challenge was the time we had to teach them. We had no idea how long the lesson would take. I do not regret anything about this project because we covered everything we needed to cover. All the tricks and tools were learned how to use.

  4. The experience i had with the kids was a lot different than i had thought it would be. I didn't think the kids would know that much about how to use the computers. The kids all new how to open the windows and how to move the mouse pretty sufficiently without our help. The kid I was working with was very intelligent and was handling the computer very well. I wouldn't mind doing this again for a future project because I had a lot of fun.

  5. Before starting this project I thought that I was going to have a really hard time with my buddy since he barely knows his ABC's. Once we got a description of his learning habits I found out that he is a pretty smart child. Once we got to actually interact with Anthony(my buddy) we had a fun time showing him the features of Microsoft Word. I still can't believe the Project went nice and smooth. I didn't really think that it would happen like that. I wouldn't change anything about the Project since it came out better than expected. I really enjoyed getting to show Anthony how to use Microsoft in order for him to use it in the future.

  6. My experience was different then I imagined, my child was doing better then I expected. The greatest challenge was telling our kid what the icon was for microsoft word. I wish i could have met the student more so it would be less akward to talk to us. The lesson was more difficult for her to understand from how we had it in class. I would want to change the lesson timing. I enjoyed meeting the student, I least enjoyed the timing we were on.

  7. Before actually meeting the kindergartners, I thought that this would be a very fun and interesting project. When we actually went to work and teach the kindergartners, it was fun and not as hard as i thought it would be. The greatest challenge when planning for my lesson was that I did not know how much my kindergartner knew. I didn't know if she had ever used a computer before and is she even knew what a keyboard was. I felt that I did create a good lesson plan. We did stay on the schedule, and even had extra time to create another document. Something that I enjoyed the most was that my student was really smart and a quick learner. For example, I would just have to show her once how to change the font, and she would do it by herself the next time. Something that I least enjoyed was not having a lot of time to spend with our student, because i did not want to feel like of I was rushing her to learn the stuff. I hope we do a project similar to this again.

    1. I agree that we did not have enough time to let them learn all the stuff. If there was enough time I would of let my Kindergartner learn the stuff slower. This project was fun as well as you say and hope again we would get a chance to do this again.

  8. 1. My thoughts about this project was that I believed it would be difficult. My perception was wrong because, when helping our kindergarten student, she was able to understand what to do.
2.The greatest challenge was planning the amount of time we were going to spend helping the student.
3.One thing we should of changed was to add more pictures or make it a bit harder for our student.
4.This experience differed from any other experiences by us having the chance to actually teaching kinder gardeners how to utilize Microsoft Word. We are also the first class to do this, which is really exciting.
5.If I could change something about the time, that would be having more time to help our student out.
6.I enjoyed helping her out and when she actually understand the lesson we have gave her. What I least enjoyed was that we had to go so quickly. I wish we had more time.

  9. I thought that the kindergartners were going to be obnoxious and not focused but I was wrong they were polite and very focused on the lesson. The greatest challenge for planning the lesson was finding out ways to keep my kid stay focused and interested in the lesson. There was nothing in the lesson I wanted to change because every thing went almost according to plan the kid learned new things and was actually having a fun time during the lesson. This experience differed from the others because in some experiencing we either taught people within our age group and sometimes not at all but this experience had us teaching kindergartners and they need to be taught in a different manner then a 9th grader. If I could change anything about "today's time with my student" it would be to have more time to spend with my student to teach him more and to get to know him better. The one thing I enjoyed most was getting to spend time with my student who was actually a pretty cool kindergartner but the one thing I enjoyed least was having to teach him myself because I could have used the extra hand in certain situations.

  10. Some preconceptions I had before this experience, were that maybe the student was never exposed to technology, and that it would be hard to have the kindergarten type a full sentence. The preconceptions I had were actually wrong because the kindergarten we got was really smart, and easily typed a full sentence. The greatest challenge when planning for my lesson was that I didn't know the student, so I didn't know what would work out or what wouldn't during the lesson. There was actually no challenge when implementing the lesson with my student, we followed through exactly, and he did exactly what he was supposed to do. I really enjoyed teaching the kindergarten how to write the sentence, but I least enjoyed the little time we had. Besides that I think today's project was a success.

    2. Monica I agree with you when you said that it would be hard for the kindergardener to type a full sentence because I was worried about that. Its true that our thoughts were wrong because the students were very smart and were able to type it themselves.

  11. My before thoughts on teaching a kindergartner how to use Microsoft word was that is was going to be pretty hard. My thought on that after I teached a kindergartner how to use Microsoft word was that it wasn't as hard as i thought it was, it was actually easy, and the kid that i was working with was outgoing and was very intelligent. For his age he was good at typing, writing a sentence and making decisions. I really liked working with him and id like to do it again. The greatest challenge planning my lesson was showing him how to choose the type of font and shape of font. One thing I would like to change is to make the timing longer, like the whole day. thirty minutes was enough but i feel that more time would make it better so we can also get to know him better. This experience differs from other experiences that i had because working with little kids is fun and we got to teach. I enjoyed talking with him about his little brother and things he liked. I would like to teach David again he was really cool.

    1. This experience is different from other experiences that I had as a Digital Literacy student because I had never thought a kindergarten student about technology. This experience was difficult for me , but after all was worth it for the kindergartner and me. The child would expand its knowledge about technology by him knowing about Microsoft Word. I enjoyed teaching my kindergarten student how to type a sentence, change the color, font, etc. I think this experience was helpful to me because I am sharing information about tech. The child is now learning to be a "high tech" student.

  13. This project has exposed me to learn how to teach and communicate with other people. Before this project I did not know anything about having patience. The greatest challenge that occurred while making the lesson plan was thinking which was the best way for a kindergartner to learn. The obstacle while teaching the kindergartner was to teach him how to double-click. This experience was different because we took action by teaching students. If I could change anything I would want the student that was assigned to me to actually be there. I enjoyed seeing the kindergartner learn and seeing his face bright up. I least enjoyed that we only had a little time to teach them because they would have learned it better. I would want to do this again and others to try it.

  14. Before I did this experiment I had many perspectives on how everything was going to work out and teaching them was going to be hard since they were in kinder. But I was completely wrong, man were they smart. They knew so much already; like opening Microsoft word, clicking something, using the keyboard, typing sentences, etc. I honestly thought I was going to have trouble teaching my student how to type a sentence and saving the document. But I was wrong, she knew how to open the document, typing, looking for the keys, highlighting the sentence and alot more. She finished early and decided to do another picture so we did another one. My experience was way off than my actually perspective. These kindergartners were so intelligent, and great kids. I hope we are able to do this again and maybe teach them even more things on the computers.

  15. Before we went to meet the kindergarten student I had some butterflies in my stomach. I was wondering they would react when they saw us. The hard part of planning the lesson was the time, I didn't know how if i would have time or if I got most of the things we had to do. I wish I could of planned more how the time was working. It was a really good experience to teach children that barely know how to write and their alphabet. I would change how had i had my lesson plan, because my partner didn't work as much as we should have. I enjoyed teaching my student, because eventually have to do that. I didn't enjoy the small space i had to tech him but in the end it was worth it.

The preconceptions i had were the same as i imagined because it was fun working with my student Jaohanna which she was really smart which made it easy to teach her. If there was one thing that i would change about my time with the kinder gardeners will be that we should have more time with them. It would of been better to have more time because we would of been able to teach them even better and they would have more knowledge about Microsoft. this experience differ from other experiences we had have in digital literacy was that we got to actually work hands on with other kids from kindergarten. By showing them more about Microsoft and showing them some basic skills to what there is to learning about Microsoft.

  18. Before even going to the kindergarten class to teach one student how to use word i really thought it was going to be very hard and i would not like to go to Panda land and teach a little kid.In this project i had to learn to teach a kindergarten student how to use word document. Some of the kindergartners had not learned or used a computer ever in there lives. The greatest challenge of teaching a kindergarten student is showing them how to actually open a word document the students could not double click the icon it took like 5 minutes to show them they would take pauses in between the clicks. In my lesson plan something i wish i would have planned differently is making to agendas because the student was smarter than expected. How the experiment differed from the experiment i have had a a digital literacy student because is because i'm not used to showing people how to open a document but in this class we do show each other how to use different internet sites. If i could change something about my time with my student was that my student would have not been absent because i was really looking forward to meeting him. What i most enjoyed today was seeing Lexie write her own sentences and that she was really smart.

Before Teaching my Kindergarten student i thought to myself "its going to be hard teaching these little kids " but when i go to that point where he was actually doing the right thing i enjoyed teaching him how to spell and writing a sentence he was hard to get him to focus he tried changing the subject a couple of times. My greatest challenge was him trying to type the sentence in which was who friend from the picture toy story. I should have Got more pictures so he can write another sentence. I've never had no one to teach like that i liked it he gave me a bug hug i was being a good dad!! ^_^ . If i would of changed something that day i would have put questions for him to read and answer but we only had like 20 minutes so we made one question. i Enjoyed teaching him how to write and what to press on the keyboard i disliked him using the mouse he would not be accurate on the CLICKING part ._. i wish i could have got Andre one more time <3 BTW he liked me Better than Monica!! 20. When I had to teach a kindergarten how to write a sentence I thought it would be hard and not even fun. The greatest challenge to planning for the lesson was that how the kid was going to act on from the lesson. But when I was teaching her I was surprised it wasn't that hard. I wish that we would have more time to work with the kindergartens. I had to teach little kids how to type a complete sentence which was a lot different from digital literacy. If I could have changed something it would be having me and my partner have more fun teaching the kindergarten. 21. When I heard we were going to teach kinder gardeners how to use Microsoft Word I thought it was going to be difficult. The greatest challenge when I was planning the lesson was the time we were going to take to teach the kinder gardener. I thought we were going to take forever on one lesson, but when we were teaching him it was a lot faster than I expected. We showed him how to change font, change the color of the words, add pictures, open Microsoft Word, and save it on a USB. The thing I enjoyed the most was teaching him how to use Microsoft Word, because now I know enough about Microsoft Word to teach it to a little kid. The thing I least enjoyed was the heat in the computer room. During the teach the A.C must have broken down or something because it was getting really hot in there.

The greatest challenge when planning our lesson was, trying to figure out what visuals we were going to make our student look at and what we were going to make our student type. One way is was different from other experiences was by learning was that it isn't always easy to teach someone something. I wish we could of spent more time with our student to be able to teach him more.

If there was one thing I would change is make them do more than 3 sentences so they could get use to using the keyboard's and, typing sentences. When I finish teaching Arianna I was like this wasn't that hard it was a challenge but all of us accomplished this lesson for the little kids. The most thing I enjoy was teaching the little girl how to type and how to use Microsoft word. The other thing I enjoy the most was talking to the little girl and telling her what she likes. When we got there he was kinda shy at first but then he got comfortable with us. I did expect it be like that. My greatest challenge when creating this lesson was the lesson plan and the limited amount of time. I would have changed the amount of time we had to do the lesson. I think this experience was different because we actually got to work with someone and teach someone something new. I would change that we would have had more time like about 40-60 min. We will show them how to open Microsoft word, how to make the font size bigger, how to change the color of the words, and also we will show them a picture so they can write 1 sentences of the picture they see.
On wednesday me and Angelica De La Torre went to pandaland and meet our student. His name is Hector Estrada.Hector was a very fast learner and was able to take in everything we taught him. We pulled up a picture for him and he wrote two sentences. We had fun, Hector was a smart learner. Hector was able to write 2 sentences and he even finished ahead of our planning. Hector was able to read and write his own sentences. We think the Kindergartener project was a success

She is a really smart little girl and even though she was small she had great potential. I personal think that the project was really fun and that the other classes have a reason to be jealous of what we did and I think that they missed out on a lot of fun. I think that the school should allow the other classes to do this and to continue doing this for the next classes will soon come in to this Digital Literacy class so they get the same experience. This project was pretty fun except for the girls and Kenny that kept awing for everything that the children said. Other than that I LOVED this project, it was better than being stuck in class doing nothing but the typing lessons which by the way were really boring. I REALLY HAD FUN!!!

    1. Armando I also had fun with this project teaching the kindergartners. Even though it was hard to teach some of the kindergartners we all had fun teaching them. I also hope that other class from digital literacy will also do this project more in the future.

  31. My experience was fun. We taught our little kid how to use Microsoft word. We also taught him to change the font, save the document it was fun because i felt good helping the little kid how to use the program.1)i imagined it to be hard and boring but it was fun teaching him.6) The thing i most enjoyed was when he would no what to do. the least was that he wouldn't remember what we said right after

    1. I Also thought that our experience with the kindergarten student would be boring because they wouldn't know what to say, or they wouldn't understand us.

    2. I totally agree with you Kenny, I did have imagined it would be hard to teach the kindergartners. But it was actually fun teaching them all that we know. I enjoyed it very much even with the bad thoughts that he would forget later on. So my experience was really fun.

  32. Before we went to panda land to teach Carlos Roman how to write a full sentence on Microsoft word I did not care about what I was doing. But when I got some back round information about little Carlos Roman I started to care about his education since my teachers help me with my computer skills that I shouldn't cheat this kid out of a education by not giving my best work on to this project. Also I didn't want to let down my partner and cheat her out of a good grade because of my laziness. So when we went to Panda Land I was kinda happy to know this little kids are trying to learn how to use a computer so we sat down (me and my partner) and showed Carlos Roman how to open Microsoft word, how to type a sentence, change the font, change to size of the font, and the color on it. I was amazed on how he quickly picked up the material. So I think it this project was a success.

    1. I understand how you feel Tony. I thought the same thing as well. You did the right thing to help Carlos use Microsoft word and how to type a sentence. You should be proud of what you did to help Carlos to type a sentence in Microsoft word.
